Abstract: This document is a handbook that will help architects, engineers, and transit system managers to understand and follow the Federal Government regulations contained in the Final Rule, 49 CFR Part 37, which describes the requirements for transportation facilities to be accessible to persons with disabilities. The major areas of accessibility address are transit facilities and the ADA, facility site and entrances, interior elements, and waiting and boarding areas. Included in the handbook are facilities accessibility checklists, which ask numerous questions about facilities and vehicle requirements. |

Abstract: With the passage of ADA it has become a civil rights violation to deny access to persons with disabilities to public transportation. The ADA requires transit agencies to provide accessible buses or equivalent services to persons with mobility, sensory or cognitive impairments. This study examines issues concerning persons with sensory and cognitive impairments, and their access to fixed route transit services. The goal of this report are to specify operating guidelines, suggest technological changes, and offer operating policy and training program modifications that solve problems of transit access for persons with sensory and cognitive impairments. To determine where the access problems exist in fixed route transit systems, an examination was undertaken of existing technologies and programs that are in use by transit agencies in North America. |

Included in the ADA is the right of a person traveling with a service animal to enjoy equal access to public and private transportation programs.
